Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The battle arose out of a Rebel advance on the town as one of Lee’s divisions marched to Gettysburg on 1 July 1863. There they encountered Federal forces, initially only cavalry. However, both sides moved reinforcements in the direction of the firing, and soon a major battle developed.
